Crowds at Candlebark Park

A chilly morning gave way to a glorious winter day – perfect for orienteering at Candlebark Park in Eltham.  A couple of hundred eager navigators agreed with us!  The Hard courses were treated to a loop of Eltham Lower Park with its miniature railway nestled beside the river. Then it was south across the bridge, and a climb up into the hillier terrain, where the complicated track network gave lots of route choices.  We had a lovely downhill across the open grassland before a final control in some erosion detail.  The easier courses had similar loops but did not venture over the bridge.

The next MelBushO is on Sunday July 15, at the always popular Woodlands Historic Park, out near the airport. Where else can you be amongst mobs of kangaroos, while jet planes roar overhead?  There’s plenty of variety out here, with woodland scrub, erosion features along the creek, rock-strewn slopes, and open farmland criss crossed by fences and gates. Parking and toilets are at the main park entrance on Somerton Road.

Choose any of the four courses – Long Hard, Short Hard, Moderate or Easy.  Register and pay on the day, any time between 10am-11.30pm, with courses closing at 1pm.  Adults $10, juniors (u21) $5.  Electronic “sportident” timing will be used; your entry fee includes loan of a timing device, as well as a full colour map, coaching, and refreshments.
