MelBush at Yellow Gum Park

The next MelbushO is on Sunday May 7 at the always popular Yellow Gum Park, which is part of Plenty Gorge Parklands.  Melways map 10 F5. Turn off Yan Yean Road onto Memorial Drive, then turn south onto Goldsworthy Lane and follow orienteering signs to the picnic area.  The park has a bit of everything – lovely forest, some detailed erosion features, cliffs and rocks, big open hills, tracks, and great river views. There are toilets and picnic tables so bring lunch and enjoy a day out.  The courses can now cross the farm and the map has been slightly enlarged.

Choose any of the four courses – Long Hard, Short Hard, Moderate, or Easy.  Start any time from 10am-12 noon.  Sportident electronic timing will be used, along with touch screen registration.  Your entry fee of $10 for adults and $5 for juniors (under 21) includes colour map, coaching, equipment hire, and refreshments.  There is no pre-entry required, just come along and pay on the day.  Further details on the website http://www.melbusho.com

Macedon

Despite the heavy downpours and forecasts of extreme weather, we had a great turnout of eager mudlarks.  Central Highlands Orienteering Club (CHOC) produced a well organised event, with excellent courses set by Mark Hennessy in classic bush orienteering style.  The Hard courses each had a challenging long leg which tested stamina and route choice.  Other legs also had plenty of options, with tracks providing less direct but easier routes, vs cross country for those who prefer the red line, with some thicker vegetation and scrambling through the creek.

MelbushO at Lysterfield

It was a warm day to be climbing the hills at Lysterfield, but the views were worth it.  We got up close with some very large rocks, and saw plenty of kangaroos as well.  Orienteers young and old enjoyed the challenge of navigating with a map, and returned with smiles on their faces.

MelBushO at Lysterfield, Sunday March 26

The next MelbushO is on Sunday March 26, at Lysterfield in Melbourne’s southeast.  This map offers a unique chance to get up close and personal with boulders, not found anywhere else this close to Melbourne.  It will test your climbing skills as well, but the views from the ridges are well worth the effort.  And I hear from the course setter that you may find some berries in fruit if you are a little peckish. If you don’t want to pick your own, bring some extra cash and purchase some of the first batch of the 2017 JWOC Jam Collection.  Our jam stall will be in full swing during the event.

Choose any of the four courses – Long Hard, Short Hard, Moderate, or Easy.  Start any time from 10am-12 noon.  Sportident electronic timing will be used, along with touch screen registration.  Your entry fee of $10 for adults and $5 for juniors under 21 includes colour map, coaching, equipment hire, and refreshments.  There is no pre-entry required, just come along and pay on the day.

Directions: From Wellington Road, turn north onto Ryans Road (look for orienteering signs). Follow signs to parking. Please park as directed. Note: there are no toilets available, and please byo drinking water.
